St. Louis IX Novena - Day 3 - Marriage and Fatherhood

Louis and Margaret of Provence were married for thirty-six years and raised eleven children. We pray for husbands, wives, and fathers.

Almighty God, Thou didst establish marriage and the family as a school of love, sacrifice, fidelity, and holiness.

We thank Thee for the witness of Saint Louis in his vocation as husband and father.

Saint Louis, thou didst receive Margaret of Provence as thy wife and the children born of your marriage as gifts entrusted to thee by God.

Amid the demands of government, warfare, diplomacy, administration, and public life, thou didst understand that thy family remained one of thy first responsibilities.

Thou sought not merely worldly success for thy children, but their eternal salvation.

Pray for Christian husbands.

Teach them to love their wives faithfully, patiently, sacrificially, and generously, as Christ loves His Church.

Pray for fathers.

Remind them that their duty is not fulfilled merely by earning money, providing a home, or securing worldly opportunities for their children.

A father must also form souls.

Help fathers teach their children to pray, to love truth, to practice virtue, to control themselves, to fulfill their duties, to defend what is good, and above all to love Jesus Christ.

Pray for me that work, ambition, comfort, wealth, reputation, or worldly achievement may never cause me to neglect those whom God has placed closest to me.

Let me lead those entrusted to me not merely by words, but by example.

May my family encounter Christ more clearly because of the way I live.

Saint Louis, obtain for husbands and fathers the grace to lead their families toward Heaven.

Traditional Prayer to Saint Louis IX

O holy King Saint Louis, worthy son of our Holy Father Saint Francis and patron of the Third Order, intercede for me with our Heavenly Father.

Obtain for me the grace to follow in thy footsteps, to be always a dutiful child of Saint Francis, and to observe exactly, all the days of my life, that holy rule which thou loved so ardently and kept so faithfully.

Be my guide and protector, so that I may never stray from the path of virtue, but increase daily in holiness and perfection, and finally merit to be numbered among the chosen ones of our Seraphic Father in Heaven.

Amen.

This prayer comes from the Franciscan Third Order tradition, of which St. Louis is patron.
