St. Louis IX Novena - Day 4 - Peacemaking and the Just Resolution of Conflict

Almighty God, Thy Son has called the peacemakers blessed.

We thank Thee for the reputation for justice, integrity, and wisdom Thou didst grant Saint Louis among the rulers of his age.

Saint Louis, men trusted thy judgment because they believed thee to be governed not merely by political interest, but by conscience.

Thou sought peace without abandoning justice and justice without abandoning charity.

Pray for me when I encounter disagreement, rivalry, hostility, resentment, or conflict.

Preserve me from the desire merely to win arguments, humiliate opponents, vindicate my pride, or repay injury with injury.

Yet preserve me also from false peace.

Do not permit me to confuse cowardice with charity, compromise with prudence, or silence before evil with Christian meekness.

Give me wisdom to recognize which offenses should be patiently endured, which disputes should be reconciled, which wrongs should be corrected, and which battles duty requires me to fight.

Teach me to seek peace whenever peace is compatible with truth.

Make me slow to anger, careful in judgment, truthful in speech, generous in forgiveness, and firm when firmness is required.

Saint Louis, teach me to be a peacemaker without ceasing to be a defender of truth and justice.

Traditional Prayer to Saint Louis IX

O holy King Saint Louis, worthy son of our Holy Father Saint Francis and patron of the Third Order, intercede for me with our Heavenly Father.

Obtain for me the grace to follow in thy footsteps, to be always a dutiful child of Saint Francis, and to observe exactly, all the days of my life, that holy rule which thou loved so ardently and kept so faithfully.

Be my guide and protector, so that I may never stray from the path of virtue, but increase daily in holiness and perfection, and finally merit to be numbered among the chosen ones of our Seraphic Father in Heaven.

Amen.

This prayer comes from the Franciscan Third Order tradition, of which St. Louis is patron.
