St. Louis IX Novena - Day 2 - The Holy Exercise of Authority

Louis became king at twelve and ruled for forty-four years. We pray for all who hold authority, and for our own small share of it.

Almighty God, from Whom all legitimate authority proceeds, we thank Thee for the example of Saint Louis, who understood that earthly power is a stewardship entrusted by Thee.

Saint Louis, although thou didst wear the crown of France, thou knewest that above thee stood the King of kings.

Thou didst understand kingship not merely as privilege, but as duty: to protect the weak, punish wrongdoing, reward virtue, preserve peace, uphold justice, and lead thy people toward the good.

Pray for all who exercise authority: fathers and mothers, pastors, teachers, employers, magistrates, military leaders, and rulers.

Pray especially for me whenever others are placed under my care.

Preserve me from pride, cowardice, vanity, selfish ambition, and the desire to please men at the expense of truth.

Teach me to understand leadership as service and authority as responsibility.

Give me courage to make difficult decisions when duty requires them, humility to seek wise counsel, strength to accept responsibility for my decisions, and justice toward those entrusted to me.

Above all, teach me first to govern myself: my passions, appetites, fears, ambitions, and desires.

For he who cannot rule himself is poorly prepared to rule anything else.

Saint Louis, teach me to exercise authority as a servant of God.

Traditional Prayer to Saint Louis IX

O holy King Saint Louis, worthy son of our Holy Father Saint Francis and patron of the Third Order, intercede for me with our Heavenly Father.

Obtain for me the grace to follow in thy footsteps, to be always a dutiful child of Saint Francis, and to observe exactly, all the days of my life, that holy rule which thou loved so ardently and kept so faithfully.

Be my guide and protector, so that I may never stray from the path of virtue, but increase daily in holiness and perfection, and finally merit to be numbered among the chosen ones of our Seraphic Father in Heaven.

Amen.

This prayer comes from the Franciscan Third Order tradition, of which St. Louis is patron.
