St. Louis IX Novena - Day 1 - Christian Formation and Faith

Louis was raised by his mother, Blanche of Castile, who taught him to fear sin more than death. We ask for a faith formed early and kept to the end.

Almighty God, we thank Thee for giving Thy Church the example of Saint Louis, King of France, who from his youth was taught to love Thee above all things.

Saint Louis, thou didst lose thy earthly father while still a child, yet Divine Providence gave thee in thy mother, Blanche of Castile, a powerful teacher and guardian of the Faith.

She taught thee that the loss of thy soul would be a greater tragedy than the loss of an earthly kingdom. Under her instruction thou didst learn to place God above honor, wealth, power, and worldly success.

As thou didst grow in years, thou didst also grow in faith, wisdom, and virtue. The responsibilities of kingship did not draw thee away from God, but became the means through which thou sought to serve Him.

Pray for me that I may place the salvation of my soul above every temporal good.

Pray that I may receive the Catholic Faith gratefully, study it diligently, defend it courageously, and hand it on faithfully.

Pray especially for parents, that they may understand the sacred responsibility entrusted to them: not merely to provide for their children in this world, but to prepare them for eternal life.

Obtain for me a faith strong enough to govern every part of my life.

Saint Louis IX, King of France, pray for us.

Traditional Prayer to Saint Louis IX

O holy King Saint Louis, worthy son of our Holy Father Saint Francis and patron of the Third Order, intercede for me with our Heavenly Father.

Obtain for me the grace to follow in thy footsteps, to be always a dutiful child of Saint Francis, and to observe exactly, all the days of my life, that holy rule which thou loved so ardently and kept so faithfully.

Be my guide and protector, so that I may never stray from the path of virtue, but increase daily in holiness and perfection, and finally merit to be numbered among the chosen ones of our Seraphic Father in Heaven.

Amen.

This prayer comes from the Franciscan Third Order tradition, of which St. Louis is patron.
