St. Louis IX Novena - Day 9 - Fidelity to Christ and His Church

Louis died before Tunis on August 25, 1270, and his last words were a prayer. We ask for fidelity to Christ and His Church until the end.

Almighty God, we thank Thee for the whole life of Saint Louis: Christian, husband, father, king, judge, warrior, penitent, servant of the poor, and faithful son of the Church.

Saint Louis, through all the duties of thy life thou sought to order temporal things toward eternal things.

Thou understood that crown, kingdom, wealth, family, reputation, achievement, military glory, and earthly honor must finally pass away.

Christ alone remains.

Pray for me that the Catholic Faith may never become merely one compartment of my life.

Let it govern everything.

Let Christ rule my work, family, friendships, ambitions, money, possessions, decisions, speech, duties, and use of time.

Give me courage when fidelity is costly.

Give me perseverance when enthusiasm disappears.

Give me loyalty to the Church when her teaching is unpopular.

Give me humility when I am corrected.

Give me fortitude when I am opposed.

And when the hour of my death approaches, obtain for me the grace to surrender every earthly possession, office, achievement, and responsibility without fear.

May I die in friendship with Christ, fortified by the sacraments of His Church, confident not in my own merits but in His mercy.

May I hear from the King whom thou served so faithfully:

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

And may I enter that Kingdom which shall have no end.

Saint Louis, pray that I may serve God faithfully on earth and reign with Him forever in Heaven.

Traditional Prayer to Saint Louis IX

O holy King Saint Louis, worthy son of our Holy Father Saint Francis and patron of the Third Order, intercede for me with our Heavenly Father.

Obtain for me the grace to follow in thy footsteps, to be always a dutiful child of Saint Francis, and to observe exactly, all the days of my life, that holy rule which thou loved so ardently and kept so faithfully.

Be my guide and protector, so that I may never stray from the path of virtue, but increase daily in holiness and perfection, and finally merit to be numbered among the chosen ones of our Seraphic Father in Heaven.

Amen.

This prayer comes from the Franciscan Third Order tradition, of which St. Louis is patron.
