St. Louis IX Novena - Day 8 - Reverence for Sacred Things and Devotion to the Passion

Almighty God, Thou alone art holy, yet in Thy goodness Thou hast given Thy people sacred places, sacred times, sacred signs, relics, sacraments, and sacramentals to raise our minds and hearts toward Thee.

We thank Thee for Saint Louis's profound reverence for the things of God.

Saint Louis, thy devotion to the Passion of Christ moved thee deeply.

Thou didst honor relics associated with Our Lord's suffering and didst raise Sainte-Chapelle as a magnificent testimony that sacred things should be treated with reverence and beauty.

Pray for me that familiarity may never produce irreverence.

Give me profound devotion to the Holy Eucharist.

Help me approach the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with attention, gratitude, reverence, and awe.

Give me respect for churches, sacred Scripture, relics, sacramentals, holy images, the saints, and everything properly set apart for divine worship.

Above all, deepen my devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ.

When I behold the Cross, remind me of the price of my redemption.

Teach me to contemplate Christ scourged, crowned with thorns, burdened with the Cross, crucified, and pierced for love of sinners.

May His sacrifice teach me both the horror of sin and the measure of divine love.

Saint Louis, obtain for me a heart filled with reverence for God and everything that belongs to Him.

Traditional Prayer to Saint Louis IX

O holy King Saint Louis, worthy son of our Holy Father Saint Francis and patron of the Third Order, intercede for me with our Heavenly Father.

Obtain for me the grace to follow in thy footsteps, to be always a dutiful child of Saint Francis, and to observe exactly, all the days of my life, that holy rule which thou loved so ardently and kept so faithfully.

Be my guide and protector, so that I may never stray from the path of virtue, but increase daily in holiness and perfection, and finally merit to be numbered among the chosen ones of our Seraphic Father in Heaven.

Amen.

This prayer comes from the Franciscan Third Order tradition, of which St. Louis is patron.
