The Acts of the Apostles records the moment when the gifts of the Spirit were poured out upon the Church: "When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:1-4).
Peter, filled with the Spirit, stood and proclaimed: "This is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy'" (Acts 2:16-18).
On that day, the promise was fulfilled. The gifts were given. The Church was born. And the fire that descended on the disciples in the upper room has never gone out, it burns in every baptized soul, in every generation, in every corner of the world, to this very day.
Reflection
Pentecost Sunday. The fire falls. The journey is complete.
Forty-eight days ago, on the Tuesday after Easter, we began this exploration of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit with the most foundational gift: the fear of the Lord, the reverential awe that opens the soul to God. Week by week, gift by gift, the Spirit has been building something in us. Piety warmed what awe had opened. Knowledge illuminated what love had entered. Fortitude strengthened what clarity had revealed. Counsel directed what strength had empowered. Understanding penetrated what guidance had approached. And wisdom, the crown, the consummation, united everything into a single, harmonious vision of God and his creation.
Today, we celebrate the day it all began, the day the Spirit fell on the Church in wind and fire, transforming a huddle of frightened men and women into the force that would change the world. That same Spirit has been at work in you throughout this entire journey, from the ashes of Lent through the glory of Easter to this moment. You have been forged by discipline and filled with gifts. You have been pruned by self-examination and equipped with supernatural power. You are not the person who received ashes on Ash Wednesday, and you are not the person who began this Easter series seven weeks ago. The Spirit has been at work. Trust what has been built.
The fire of Pentecost is not a museum piece. It burns now, in you, in this moment. The gifts you have received are not decorative; they are operational. The world into which the Spirit sends you is the same broken, beautiful, groaning world that the first disciples entered on that first Pentecost. It needs what you have been given: awe, love, clarity, strength, guidance, insight, and above all, the wisdom that sees God in all things and brings peace wherever it goes. Go. The Spirit is with you. The gifts are yours. And the story is just beginning.
