Thomas Aquinas connects the gift of wisdom to the Beatitude of the peacemakers: "The gift of wisdom corresponds to the Beatitude, 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.' For peace is the proper effect of wisdom. Wisdom orders all things rightly, and when all things are rightly ordered, the result is peace, not the mere absence of conflict, but the tranquility of order, the harmony of all things resting in their proper place."
Aquinas explains: "The wise person is a peacemaker because they see all things in God and therefore see all things in their right relation to one another. Where others see only competing interests and irreconcilable differences, the wise person sees the underlying order, the plan of God that encompasses all things and reconciles all things. This vision enables the wise person to speak peace into conflict, to see solutions where others see only problems, and to hold together what the world wants to tear apart."
For Aquinas, wisdom is thus the most practical of the gifts, even though it is also the most contemplative. The person who sees all things from God's perspective is the person best equipped to bring peace, healing, and order to a broken and chaotic world.
Reflection
Forty-eight days since Easter. The eve of Pentecost. And Aquinas delivers the final connection: wisdom produces peace. Not passive, conflict-avoiding peace, but the tranquility of order, the deep harmony that comes when all things are in their right place, oriented toward their right end, held together by the love of God.
This is the culmination of everything. The entire journey, from the ashes of Lent through the seven cardinal and theological virtues, from the empty tomb of Easter through the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, has been aimed at this: the formation of a peacemaker. Not a peacemaker in the weak sense of someone who avoids conflict, but in the strong sense of someone who creates peace, who sees the order beneath the chaos, the love beneath the hatred, the unity beneath the division, and who works, with all the gifts at their disposal, to make that deeper reality visible.
Tomorrow is Pentecost. The fire falls. The Spirit descends. The gifts we have been receiving week by week will be sealed and confirmed. You have been opened, warmed, illuminated, strengthened, guided, admitted into the depths of mystery, and crowned with the capacity to taste God's goodness in all things. You are equipped. Not perfectly, sanctification continues until the end of life and beyond. But really. The gifts are yours. The Spirit dwells within you. And the world that God loves so fiercely needs what you have been given. Rest tonight. Tomorrow, the mission begins.
