Pope Leo XIII, in Divinum Illud Munus, describes the culmination of the Spirit's work in the gift of wisdom: "The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church. As the soul gives life to the body, so the Holy Spirit gives life to the Mystical Body of Christ. The gifts of the Spirit, crowned by wisdom, are the means by which the faithful are progressively conformed to the image of Christ, transformed from glory to glory, as the Apostle says, by the Spirit of the Lord."
Leo continues: "Wisdom is the perfection of charity. It is the gift that enables the soul to contemplate God with delight and to order all things in the light of that contemplation. The wise person does not merely believe in God's love; they experience it, rest in it, and radiate it. Wisdom is the consummation of all the gifts, for it unites the soul to God in the most intimate way possible in this life."
For Leo XIII, the gift of wisdom is not merely the last in a series but the fulfillment of the entire series, the gift that takes everything the Spirit has been building and brings it to completion. It is the gift that transforms the believer from a student of God's love into a vessel of it.
Reflection
Forty-six days since Easter. Three days to Pentecost. Leo XIII draws together the entire architecture of the gifts: wisdom is their consummation, their crown, their fulfillment. Everything the Spirit has been building, the awe, the intimacy, the clarity, the strength, the guidance, the penetrating insight, reaches its completion in the gift that enables us to contemplate God with delight and order all of life in the light of that contemplation.
The word "delight" is key. Wisdom is not merely the highest knowledge; it is the highest joy. The wise person does not merely know the most important things; they savor them. They taste the goodness of God in a piece of bread, in the laughter of a friend, in the silence of a church, in the struggle of daily life. Wisdom sees God everywhere, not because it projects God onto things that lack him, but because it perceives the God who is already there, sustaining all things in existence moment by moment.
We are almost at the end of our Easter journey. The Lenten season forged us through discipline and self-examination. The Easter season has been filling us with the Spirit's gifts, one by one, week by week. And now, on the threshold of Pentecost, the final gift invites us not to more effort but to more receptivity, to rest in the God who has been building a home within us, gift by gift, since Easter morning.
